  • Supreme Court slams TN govt for defiance of order against Jallikattu

    The Supreme Court on Tuesday slammed the Tamil Nadu government for allowing people to defy its order on jallikattu, and for failing to maintain law and order in the state. The court had banned the controversial sport in 2014, on the grounds that it was cruel to bulls.

  • Animal Welfare Board moves SC against TN Jallikattu Act

    The Animal Welfare Board of India has moved the Supreme Court challenging the new Act allowing the traditional sport of Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu. The court has listed the matter for January 30 along with the Centre’s plea to withdraw the 2016 notification allowing Jallikattu.

  • Three die as Jallikattu events are staged in Tamil Nadu

    Two persons were killed and 82 others suffered minor injuries during Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu’s Pudukottai district on January 22 as the Tamil Nadu Government said the ban on Jallikattu events had been lifted through the ordinance. One person died due to dehydration in Madurai during protests, police said.

  • Sporadic violence in Chennai, vehicles near police station torched

    The pro-Jallikattu agitation turned violent near the Chennai Marina Beach on January 23 as a section of them set on fire several vehicles parked in front of the Vivekananda House police station. Police resorted to teargas shells and lathi charge in some areas to disperse protestors and bring the situation under control.

    Tamil Nadu police swung into action on January 23 morning to evict protestors on the Jallikattu issue. In many areas, police succeeded in evicting them peacefully but there was sporadic violence in some places including Chennai as police used teargas shells and a mild lathi charge to evict protestors on road roko.

  • Sasikala asks CM, AIADMK leaders to enable Jallikattu at the earliest

    AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala on January 20 reviewed the situation relating to Jallikattu with party leaders, and instructed CM O Panneerselvam and senior party leaders to make arrangements for holding the Jallikattu at the earliest in accordance with the wishes of the people. The stage is set for an early Jallikattu event at Vaadivaasal.

  • Tamil Nadu film stars fast for a day on Jallikattu issue

    Tamil film actors Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Surya, Ajith, Dhanush, Vishal and others observed a day's fast organised by the South Indian Film Artistes Association (Nadigar Sangam) on January 20 in support of the call for Jallikattu events in the State. They demanded lifting of the ban on Jallikattu. Music director A R Rahman too observed a day long fast to express his solidarity with the cause.

  • Stalin, thousands of DMK workers arrested for Rail Roko on Jallikattu issue

    DMK working president M K Stalin led thousands of DMK workers in a Rail Roko agitation to protest the ban on Jallikattu and demanding that the sport be held. Stalin and several thousand DMK leaders and workers were arrested in various parts of Tamil Nadu.

  • TN Govt issues draft ordinance for Jallikattu issue

    The Tamil Nadu government draft ordinance to allow the holding of Jallikattu in the State has been handed over to the Centre and will be implemented by Sunday after getting the President's assent on January 21. Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam, said on his return from Delhi after meeting legal experts, that the Jallikattu event would be held on Sunday, if all goes well as per schedule.

  • Rahman, TN film industry to observe fast on Jan 20 in support of Jallikattu

    Music meastro A R Rahman has said that he would undertake a fast in Chennai on January 20 to press the demand for lifting the ban on Jallikattu. The South Indian Film Artistes Association (Nadigar Sangam) also said its members would observe a fast on January 20 to press the demand.

  • No Central ordinance for Jallikattu, matter sub judice says Modi

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ruled out issuing an ordinance to enable holding of Jallikattu. When Tamil Nadu chief minister O Panneerselvam raised the issue of the Jallikattu ban, and urged the Centre to issue an ordinance to allow the bull-fight, the Prime Minister is understood to have told the CM that the matter was sub judice and therefore there was no way the Centre could issue an ordinance at this juncture.
